New York driving adventures
I got back from Israel yesterday. My flight landed at 6 AM at JFK and I decided that it was best to make the trek over to Moshe’s in Flatbush for Shachris and breakfast (I drove down from Boston the day of my flight and left my car at a long term parking place – very cool thing to do).
I needed the Belt, westbound to the Verrazano. (I am not explaining what anything is on purpose – being cool means knowing New York like a local). Obviously, I was in the right lane and the entrance ramp for the Belt was on the left – duh. [Dork alert – try getting across four lanes of New York traffic with Massachusetts plates.] It was great, no one would let me go; I sat there with my blinker on and didn’t budge. Every car honked, a few people were even kind enough to shout new words at me.
I then called Moshe on my cell phone for better directions. Big no-no – in NYC talking with a hand-held while driving is a ticketable offence – at least that is what the cop told me when he pulled me over. But he was great (all NY cops are great), he felt sorry for me, let me off the hook, and told me how to find Avenue P.
Breakfast was at the Garden of Eatin – a real diner with aluminum, mirrors and light-brown coffee (and it is totally kosher).
Not much more to say. I love NY; it is a real adventure, especially after an all-night flight from Israel.

Don’t tell me you pulled the whole Rabbi-defense to get out of getting a ticket.

Rabbi-defense? No way. I was in Flatbush, the land of rabbi-looking types. To the cop, I was just another yarmulke wearing slickster. I can think of 3 reasons why the cop let me off – 1. He was incredibly cool (and I think this is true of most NYC cops, they are great) 2. I am incredibly cool (the cop could sense this and didn’t want to mess with my coolness) and 3. (The most likely), Divine Providence
To be perfectly frank, I didn’t even try to defend myself. I had my phone out and on, I was in a panic, I admitted my guilt, I was lost, I asked for help, and I had my friend Moshe chime in on my cell phone (now with the speaker phone on). The cop didn’t stand a chance.

New York is great. I just spend a week on ‘The Metro Trip.’ We got a thorough tour of Flatbush.
Jews were all over Manhattan and eastward, especially in the diamond district. As one Aish Rabbi put it. “Jews don’t control the media. We control the world!”
We then spend the Shabbos in Lawrence and based on what we saw, all Orthodox Jews are rich.

The cop probably was cool, your “coolness” is questionable dear and as for Divine Providence….absolutely. Anyway, when I pick you up from JFK in 2 weeks I want to go to Flatbush too….and the garden of eatin’….I’ve never been to a diner. It is one of those American things I’ve only seen in the movies. I love this blog….I’m such a nerd!
