My Annual Beef – Daylight Savings Rant
I wonder if everyone is as whacked out as I am today. It seems to me that daylight savings time is nothing more than nationally instituted jetlag. Obviously the man is out to keep us hard working people down, and to strengthen our coffee addictions. Not cool.
For those who haven’t noticed, the hour-loss torture began 3 weeks earlier this year due to legislation introduced by this congressman from Massachusetts. I tried sending him an email last year, but he only accepts correspondence from people living in his district. If you happen to live in the 7th congressional district, call your congressman and tell him that his energy saving plan is a sham and that you demand your sleep back. The dark mornings make it bad for school kids waiting for buses, and hard for religious Jews to pray before work.
At least in Israel they are cool with how they time Daylight Savings. They start it right before Yom Kippur (so the fast will end an hour earlier) and begin it before Passover (so you get an extra hour to sit at the Seder and eat Matzo).

I walked into the kitchen at work this morning at 9:15, complained about DST(I wished a series of unpleasant things upon the originator of the idea). I was met with surprise; it turns out I had infiltrated a cabal that loved DST beceause it’s light out when they go home. Of course, anyone who agrees with me was likely still home nursing their 3rd cup of coffee and wondering how they’d drive into work without falling asleep.
I say we revolt. If we all agree to just stick with the old time, the government has no power to stop us. Bring back the dark! Bring back the dark!

Nick! I agree - we should revolt, down with the man. Interestingly enough, I found this old post from the Department of Transportation:
Federal law does not require any area to observe daylight saving time. But if a state chooses to observe daylight time, it must follow the starting and ending dates set by the law. In those parts of the country that do not observe daylight time, no resetting of clocks is required. Those states and territories include Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Marianas.
Clearly we do not need to put up with this oppression if we don’t want to. If someone gets home while it is still light, he is obviously not working hard enough.

It is not so bad…and you get these lovely long days. I love that it is light outside so late. I admit it is initially challenging…. trying to convince 5 kids that they really are tired an hour earlier so that they should still go to bed at a decent hour. But then it is all over and you get those long sunny days……loosen up, catch up on some sleep and go to bed a little earlier for a few nights and then just relax and enjoy these langoriously sunny days that await you.
