Nick Joe is the other person who posts anonymously on More Torah (I know who he is though). I asked him about it and he said you are indeed different people!

Great thoughts Anon! If one wants to be machmir and go with Rav Moshe then by all means he should.

BTW - have you ever met my friend Nick Joe?

Daf 48a

Says Rav: The ear which listens to song should be torn off.

Maharsha comments (not a translation): The proper use for ones ears is to listen to the words of our Sages and Torah wisdom.

Thoughts?

The Gemara in Sota 48 discusses how music has been banned since the destruction of the beis hamikdash. Various opinions a cited from modern poskim, some makel, some machmir.

The MISHNAH BERURAH (OC 560:13) cites the BACH who sides with the more stringent opinions that song is prohibited at all times, even without musical accompaniment

Moshe Feinstein says a ba'al hanefesh (spiritual person) should side with the MB and refrain from listening to music.

Obvious exceptions: Weddings, Shabbos Table.
